An Accent in the Look
Adding an accent can turn even the most "basic" outfit into a distinctive, stylish look. It could be a bright bag or shoes against neutral tones, a statement piece of jewelry, and so on.
Contrasting Textures
Stylish combinations come from pairing opposite textures – textured ones (lace, knitwear, feathers, tweed, knit) with smooth ones (leather, satin, latex, silk). For example, a knit t-shirt with a silk skirt, or lace with eco-leather.
Proportion Contrast
Another styling trick is pairing a voluminous bottom with a fitted top, or vice versa. Think palazzo pants with a crop top, an oversized t-shirt with leggings, or an A-line skirt with a bustier.
Mixing Styles
This is an interesting way to express your individuality by combining elements from different fashion movements and directions. Sporty + romantic, classic + casual, ethnic + grunge, masculine silhouettes + feminine details.
Playing with a Shirt
Tuck one side of your shirt into your jeans and leave the other loose. Roll up the sleeves and tie the shirt in front. Use it as an extra layer over tops and t-shirts.
The Scarf
A scarf can be tied around the chest instead of a top, around the neck instead of a choker, on a bag handle as extra decor, or even used in place of a headband.
A Sweater or Long Sleeve Instead of a Scarf
If you're not a fan of tying knots, you can simply drape a sweater over your shoulders. It's the perfect option for a cool evening: a striped knit long sleeve adds a nice finishing touch to any look.
Layering
For example, wear a sundress over a t-shirt, add accent socks to your look, throw a linen shirt over a top, or tie it around your waist (a trend that's back this season).
Show the Finer Details
Reveal the neck area with a deep neckline; the wrists with short or rolled-up sleeves; the ankles; or accentuate the waist.
This trick highlights your elegance and femininity.
Monochrome
Combining clothing in variations of a single color, distinguished by different shades, is a classic styling technique. To start, try neutral tones: grey, beige, blue, black, white.
