How to Mix Prints in One Outfit Without Clashing
Two prints in one outfit aren't a mistake — the mistake is letting them compete for attention.
One of the questions we hear often in consultations is, "Can you combine different prints in one look, and how do you pair them?" Let's take a closer look.
Combining two statement prints is possible, but it's a move for advanced style enthusiasts.
There are five main types of prints:
• floral (which splits into two broad groups – large-scale and small-scale florals)
• animal (leopard, zebra, and so on)
• ethnic (African, Asian, and so on)
• geometric (check, stripe, polka dot)
• abstract (military, painterly swirls, and so on)
Each print has its own character, its own seasonal presence, and its own set of partners it pairs well with in classic combinations. The main rule is that the patterns need something in common — the motif itself, a matching scale, or repeating colors.
Take a look at the combinations below:
• One print in different scales
Dressing head to toe in the exact same print can be dizzying to look at. But if you vary the scale — using one print, or two very similar ones, in different sizes — you can create a harmonious, stylish effect.
• Stripes as a neutral
Striped pieces pair with virtually any print (especially if you remember the rule about a shared color) — you can use them just like you would a neutral black piece.
• Repeating a color
One of the simplest, most reliable rules for mixing prints is a shared color palette — or more precisely, the prints should have at least one color in common. Repeating a color lets the prints complement each other instead of competing for attention.
• Mixing two similar prints
Two similar prints in the same scale but different colors sit well together and don't clash.
Mixing prints isn't just allowed — it's worth doing, and the 60-30-10 color rule will help you avoid missteps. For example: let the largest print take up 60% of the outfit, the second-largest 30%, and leave 10% for a solid color (accessories and shoes work well here).
